Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are designed to address some of the biggest drawbacks to regular dentures, including the possibility of them shifting or moving inside the mouth. And while well-fitting dentures that are paired with high-quality adhesives are much less likely to move, many patients prefer the stability and peace of mind that comes with more permanent teeth replacement-solutions.

At Willow Chase Dentistry, our dental team knows how important patient comfort and satisfaction is, especially when it comes to replacing missing, chipped, or broken teeth. That’s why we offer implant-supported dentures, which provide the best of both worlds. While they don’t require adhesive to be placed inside the mouth, they’re still removable, making them easy to clean and replace.

Two Types of Implant-Supported Dentures

Although the difference is impossible to detect in a person’s smile, there are two types of implant-supported dentures: bar-retained dentures and ball-retained dentures. Both types of dentures are made with acrylic bases and porcelain or ceramic teeth, creating a lifelike and natural appearance for the gums and teeth.

As the names suggest, the two types of implant-supported dentures are installed differently:

Bar-retained dentures
After installing between two and five implants your jaw, your dentist will mold a thin metal bar based on the curvature of your jaw and attach it to the implants. Clips are then installed onto the bar, and the dentures clip into place on this secure base.

Ball-retained dentures
Another adhesive-free solution, ball-retained dentures also require surgically attaching implants into your jaw. However, these dentures utilize metal attachments that correspond with the attachments on the implants inside your mouth. The dentures then clip into place via the corresponding attachments, creating a stable connection.

Patients who choose implant-supported dentures to replace broken or missing teeth often do so because they provide greater peace of mind and confidence than traditional dentures. Although modern dentures and adhesives are highly effective at staying in place, implant-supported dentures essentially remove the possibility, reducing the anxiety and stress that some patients feel with standard dentures.
